David Heer is a Senior Advisor for The Margolin Group. Heer has more than twenty years experience in healthcare finance, spanning roles in venture capital and healthcare company financial management.
Prior to joining The Margolin Group, Heer was the CFO and an investing principal and partner at Acacia Venture Partners, a healthcare services-focused venture capital investment firm. Formed in 1995, Acacia is recognized as the first US venture capital firm to focus specifically on investing in healthcare services businesses. Acacia backed a number of innovative early stage companies that pioneered new healthcare sectors and grew into large national companies. As an investing principal with Acacia, Heer managed the due diligence process for each of the investment projects evaluated, including the Fund’s 34 consummated investments. He served on the Board of Directors of a number of investee companies that have become nationally recognized sector leaders, including Psychiatric Solutions, Inc., the leading psychiatric services company in the US; Phycor Management Corporation, one of the earliest and largest physician independent practice association companies; and InTouch Technologies, a leading medical robotics company. As CFO of Acacia Venture Partners, Heer oversaw financial reporting and authored the firm’s quarterly and annual reports to investors.
Earlier, Heer was an Associate with First Century Partners, an industry diversified venture capital firm affiliated with Smith Barney. At First Century, Heer worked primarily with the healthcare team, investing in medical technology and pharmaceutical companies in addition to emerging healthcare service companies. He has also worked as an independent consultant, serving as acting CFO and business advisor to a number of early stage healthcare-related growth companies.
Heer holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley and a BS in Business Finance from San Jose State University. An avid Francophile, Heer completed a portion of his MBA in France at l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC), earning a “Certficat HEC.” Heer served for a number of years on the Board of the Lycée Français, a french-speaking grammar and high school in San Francisco, and he is an adult leader and treasurer of his son’s boy scout troop.
