Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has announced the results of a study on Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMH). The referenced BCBSRI study found that PCMHs improve health outcomes, decrease costs, save money, and provide a return on investment. The study compared traditional primary care and PCMHs, between the years of 2009 and 2014, and found that PCMHs, over traditional primary care, saved $30 million, were 5 percent less costly and delivered a 250 percent return on investment.
According to the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative, a PCMH is an approach to the delivery of primary care that is patient-centered, comprehensive, coordinated, accessible, and committed to quality and safety.
The Margolin Group (TMG) provided strategic partnership support to Care New England Health System, BCBSRI and Rhode Island Primary Care Physicians Corporation in aligning their clinical and financial incentives to partner and build a PCMH strategy together.
TMG assisted these organizations with developing care model innovations that support critical PCMH work, namely the development of end-of-life care, outpatient Behavioral Health team-based care, and maternity programs. These initiatives helped physicians effectively coordinate and deliver high-quality, low-cost patient centered care and treatment.
TMG supports the PCMH delivery model as an essential component of fully integrated systems of care and coverage to ensure the delivery of high-quality population health based care.
