Health Care Signups Exceed Hopes, With 4 Million Newcomers to Federal Marketplace, Article by Robert Pear, New York Times

The Obama administration proudly announced that 12.7 million people have either enrolled or had their health insurance coverage extended, during the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) third open enrollment period. The enrollment numbers, as they exceeded expectations, are an important milestone for the Obama administration and ultimately an indication of the ACA’s success and sustainability.

Approximately 9.6 million enrolled in the federal Healthcare.gov marketplace, which saw four million new enrollees, while 3.1 million people enrolled in state run marketplaces.

President Obama recently commented on his administration’s landmark legislation. “The nation’s uninsured rate now stands at its lowest level ever, and demand for marketplace coverage during December 2015 was at an all-time high,” Mr. Obama said. “Health care costs are lower than expected when the law was passed, and health care quality is higher, with improvements in patient safety saving an estimated 87,000 lives.”

The ACA helps ensure millions of Americans have access to the healthcare they deserve and lays the groundwork for building a healthcare system that consistently and sustainably delivers high-quality, patient-centered, cost-effective care. TMG applauds the Obama administration on this significant achievement and fully supports the ACA as a critical component to transforming our nation’s healthcare system.
