Former U.S. Congressman Patrick Kennedy, a strong advocate for mental health, is using his recent memoir to ensure that mental health services are part of the presidential election dialogue. In his memoir, which recounts his own struggle with addiction, Kennedy critiques the U.S. health care system’s inability to deliver the essential behavioral health services to patients in need, driving up medical costs, and leaving countless sufferers of mental illness unable to live healthy and productive lives.
Recently, pundits have seized Kennedy’s book release as an opportunity to elevate the discussion about mental health care in the country. Sam Toney of Modern Healthcare, for instance recognizes this crisis stating: “The talk in mental health circles is that this vital treatment is a forgotten civil right. With $100 billion in lost productivity every year because of untreated or undertreated mental illness, it’s a critical issue.”
The Margolin Group (TMG) considers access to patient-centered behavioral health care services a critical component of any high-quality, cost-effective system of care and coverage – and a component fundamental to transforming our health care system nationwide. In collaboration with our partners across the country, TMG is working to build, implement and launch creative and effective behavioral health solutions.
