The Margolin Group, through its work with the Win4RI Partnership, has supported Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) and Care New England in developing a program that offers an innovative set of doula services to mothers at Woman and Infants Hospital. Trained by the VNA of Care New England’s HealthTouch program, Certified Nursing Assistants provide much needed doula sessions to new mothers.
Doulas in the program provide a variety of services to mothers, such as demonstrating infant bedding basics, swaddling and soothing techniques, and how to feed, hold and wash a newborn. During their visits, doulas help to ease the demands on a family by assisting with household tasks like laundry, dishwashing and general tidying. Commenting on their experience with doulas, new mothers have said, “I feel much more confident about handling the baby since [the doula] was here.” And, “It was a nice continuation of the teaching that was started in the hospital.” One father said the “doula was terrific, (she) really helped my wife!”
