Surge in Medicare Advantage Sign-Ups Confounds Expectations, Article by Robert Pear, The New York Times

Contrary to industry expectations and the Congressional Budget Office’s projected 30% drop in enrollment, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans have continued to grow in popularity over the last five years. The growth comes despite deep cuts drafted into the Affordable Care Act. Instead, the private Medicare program offered by insurance companies across the nation saw an increase of more than six million enrollees.

MA plans are popular with both insurers and seniors. The MA market being “stable and predictable” as former chief actuary for Medicare, Robert S. Foster says, makes it an attractive option for insurers. According to Marilyn B. Tavenner, chief executive of America’s Health Insurance Plans, “seniors are increasingly choosing Medicare Advantage because they recognize the tremendous value of this program in their daily lives.”

The Margolin Group (TMG) believes MA programs offer instructive insights into how to properly structure a benefit plan to ensure patients receive the high-quality care they deserve and insurance companies remain sustainable. TMG supports organizations across the country in building and launching MA initiatives that leverage the care improvements and cost reductions found through truly coordinated care.
