The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a final rule authorizing Medicare to pay doctors for end-of-life planning and to help patients decide how they would like to be cared for. The new rule will take effect in January 2016.
The rule has received widespread praise from organizations like The American Medical Association and The American Hospital Association for supporting discussions that help ensure patients’ end-of-life wishes are respected.
Recognizing that “80% of U.S. citizens wish to die at home, but fewer than 20% actually do,”[1] The Margolin Group works with organizations across the nation to build, in partnership, innovative solutions that help remove the legal, medical, financial and social barriers preventing patients from receiving high-quality, safe and affordable advanced care. The Margolin Group applauds CMS’ decision to authorize payments to doctors for end-of-life planning as an important next step in removing the stigma associated with end-of-life and palliative care planning.
